Designing With Energy, Expression and Emotion
Mar 07, 2026At Liberty Interior Design, we believe great design goes far beyond aesthetics. A well designed space should not only look beautiful, it should support the way you live and influence how you feel every time you walk into it.
When I begin designing a space, I always consider three important elements. These principles guide every decision we make throughout the design process.
Energy and Flow
The first element I focus on is the energy and flow of the space. This includes how you move through the room, the openness of the layout and how each area connects to the next.
There is a natural rhythm that exists within well designed spaces. Whether someone calls it feng shui, spatial planning or simply good design, the intention is the same. The space should feel balanced, supportive and effortless to move through.
When the energy of a room is aligned, it creates a sense of calm and ease for the people who live in it.
Design Expression
The second element is the visual language of the space. This is where design principles truly come into play.
Scale, proportion, symmetry, colour, materials and texture all work together to create a cohesive expression. These choices define the personality of the room and establish the overall aesthetic.
Whether a space is contemporary, traditional or transitional, the design details must feel intentional and harmonious.
Emotion
Perhaps the most important element is the emotion we want the space to evoke.
Design has the power to influence how we feel. A room can inspire calmness, excitement, comfort, creativity or connection. Understanding what emotion we want people to experience allows us to design with purpose.
When emotion is considered alongside function and aesthetics, the space becomes something much more meaningful.
Artisan’s Cove at Waters Edge by Liberty

A beautiful example of this philosophy is Artisan’s Cove, the lakeside retreat my husband Joe and I designed at Waters Edge by Liberty on Lake Erie.
Our vision was to create an experience that felt like stepping into a beautiful art gallery on the water. We wanted guests to feel surrounded by creativity and vibrant expression while still enjoying the comfort and relaxation of a lakeside getaway.
The layout was designed to feel open and welcoming. The artwork and colour palette bring energy and inspiration into the space. The textures and furnishings create warmth and comfort.
Every decision was intentional.
The goal was to evoke happiness, peace, adventure and connection. We wanted guests to feel inspired while also feeling completely at home.
Waters Edge by Liberty Resort
Waters Edge by Liberty is more than just a vacation property. It is a living example of how environment shapes experience.
Located on the shores of Lake Erie, the resort was designed with the same philosophy that guides our interior design work. Every detail was thoughtfully considered to create spaces that feel calming, inspiring and connected to nature.
From Artisan’s Cove to Liberty Lodge and the surrounding outdoor areas, the design celebrates creativity, relaxation and community. It is a place where people gather, reconnect and experience the beauty of thoughtful design by the water.
The resort also reflects the deeper philosophy behind High Vibe Living, which is the belief that the environments we create influence our energy, our relationships and the way we experience life.
Design That Elevates Life
When we combine energy, design expression and emotion, a space becomes more than just a place to live.
It becomes a place that supports your lifestyle, reflects your story and elevates your everyday experience.
That philosophy is at the heart of everything we do at Liberty Interior Design.
Because when your environment aligns with your life, everything feels better.
